Promoting Sustainable Agriculture for Zero Hunger: A Dialogue with Local Farmers and Food Suppliers
In a concerted effort to tackle the issue of attaining Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, a pivotal session was organized in collaboration between the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) and the Biotechnology Department of The University of Faisalabad. The session was led by Dr Shaista Shafiq, HOD Biotechnology Department. This session served as a platform for local farmers and food suppliers to gather, discuss, and address the challenges that surround food production, distribution, and accessibility in Pakistan, with the goal of achieving a future without hunger.
Dr. Shaista illuminated the path to sustainable food agriculture, emphasizing innovative farming practices, conservation of natural resources, and the responsible use of biotechnology. The nutritional value of crops grown and the irrigation of plants with potentially contaminated water, underlining the need for a holistic approach to address these challenges has also been discussed.
Furthermore, to enlighten our commitment to environmental sustainability, students actively engaged in a tree plantation activity during the event. This endeavour reflects our dedication to fostering a more ecologically responsible future. In addition to knowledge dissemination, the university also emphasizes practical, hands-on learning experiences. For example, during recent events, students actively engaged in tree plantation activities as a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability. By providing access to both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, we contribute to building a more ecologically responsible and food-secure future.
